What is architecture exactly?

Architecture is all about designing and building, techniques that can apply to it that also fall under construction. This line is also concerned with not just the structure but also how the design would look. Designing goes on an artsy side with architecture, often tied to culture. You'll see many of them around the world. There are famous architecture buildings that are world sites and tourist spots, and they are made during different periods.

Types of architecture

There are a few types of architecture and categories of where buildings fall into. These were not from architects but from society and its people. Labels often help identify things so it is now widely known to many people worldwide. Famous architecture is all around the world that shows these types. Here are the few types of architecture listed below,

  • Domestic Architecture - Houses and units that accommodate people are a prime example. It covers buildings that you can do your basic needs in.
  • Power Architecture - The wealthy and those with power happen to have buildings in this label. This involves villas, palaces, mansions, and the like.
  • Governmental Architecture - Buildings where the government does its work. This includes courtrooms, monarchy palaces that can fit too, and halls or towers of justice. They represent the government in a physical sense.
  • Museums and Libraries - These represent records and historical moments. They are important buildings and hold priceless things inside them.
  • Theatres - Originating from Greece, this building has become quite important. A place of entertainment and arts, it has its own category among other buildings.

These are a few types that are labels of architectures, there are many more but this gives the idaea. In the present, these are everything you can see around the world as well. Studying it may give you an edge to understand these designs better.

Famous architecture in the world

1. Taj Mahal in Agra, India

Built by Shah Jahan for his wife to remember his most favoured wife, Mumtaz Mahal, it became quite a wonder. It is a funerary mosque and inspires many, also now a UNESCO World Heritage site. 

2. Colosseum in Rome, Italy

It has a capacity of 50,000 spectators and is used for gladiator fights, it was built in 72 AD and finished in 80 AD. From the records, it is a structure from the ancient Romans, and many still find this inspiring. 

3. Eiffel Tower in Paris, France

A structure famous in France and named after Gustave Eiffel, it stands 1,063 tall. For 41 years, it has taken the title of the tallest structure in the world. Along with that, it is one of the famous tourist spots in France for many visitors to see and even explore.

4. Angkor Wat in Cambodia 

A large temple built by King Suryavarman III, it was created in the 12th century and originally for the Hindu god Vishnu. Then it now became a Buddhist temple.

5. Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France

The prime example of Gothic architecture was first a concept by Bishop Maurice de Sully. Construction started in 1163 and 200 years later, it is now the cathedral today. It is still standing despite the many wars and revolutions. 

6. Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russia

Made between 1555 and 1561, Ivan the Terrible would make it known to commemorate the capture of Astrakhan and Kazan. Following that, Byzantine Christianity ever since saw it as a symbol of the heavenly city too.

7. Sydney Opera House in Sydney, Australia

A design by a Danish architect, Jort Utzon, the structures are sail-like and a product of the 20th century. It is a multi-venue arts complex, hosting 1,500 performances. Also houses 1.2 million people for their performances and visits. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage site.

8. Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey

The name means "Holy Wisdom", it is quite special in its history. It was first a Greek Orthodox Church, then from 1204 to 1261, it briefly became a Roman Catholic Church. Later on, a mosque from 1453 to 1931. Furthermore, the place serves as a museum between 1935 to 2020 then reverts back to a mosque.

9. Leaning Tower of Pisa in Pisa, Italy

A construction that continues and goes on even over 200 years of war, it contains lots of steps. Visitors can climb up to the 297th step to see the view outside. Additionally, the design is very much Romanesque and still stands tall.

10. La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain

A mix of Gothic and Art Nouveau style, it is a style from architect Antoni Gaudi. However, the plan is disrupted by a civil war, and piecing it together. They say that construction finishes in 2026, a century after Gaudi's death.

 

These are some of the famous architecture in the world and you may be saying that those are buildings. Which, yes, they are. Moreover, the designs have made these buildings shine. Designs that are not elsewhere but from where it is made from. Additionally, they are historically and culturally significant to its designs. Famous architecture is the shape of today's architecture.
