What MRICS stands for

Simply put, it means Member of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors(MRICS). What is RICS you may ask. The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors is in charge of regulating property professionals and surveyors within the United Kingdom and across other nations as well. It is an independent professional association founded in the 1800's.

How to become an MRICS?

To become an MRICS, you would start with getting the AssocRICS first. The process is lengthy and starts with the requirements for the Assessment of Professional Competency (APC). APC involves at least two to three years of on-the-job training and assessment with an employer. Here are the listed requirements:

  • Choosing your sector pathway, however, for full membership you have to choose from a list of 22 rather than just 13.
  • Find a RICS member who is willing to support and guide you through your application process.
  • Pass the RICS online ethics exam.
  • Submit a Case Study: 3,000 words on a recent project you have worked on that shows your technical abilities and is no older than 24 months.
  • Also your CPD Record: 48 hours of CPD training must have been completed during the last 12 months.
  • Send in a Summary of Experience: this must satisfy Mandatory competencies, 1,500 words, and technical competencies for your chosen sector pathway, 3,000 to 4,000 words.

Once complete, you will be an associate for RICS. If you want to go above and beyond, there are a few more steps. Work experience is important for them.

  • If you have up to 5 years of work experience you would need 24 months of structured training.
  • 5-10 years of work experience requires 12 months.
  • Over 10 years requires no structured training.

Once these are met, and you are seen as ready, you can go for a 60-minute assessment interview. This is the final step for them to see how ready you are. Once done, you can be an MRICS.

For those who lack work experience, you can go for a RICS apprenticeship which helps you get AssocRICS. Then you can work your way to MRICS.

Is MRICS hard?

It is definitely challenging and requires full commitment. It takes years and can be costly as well. But the real question is, "Am I ready to do this?" because this is all up to you. Do you want to fully commit or find a different path? It requires a lot and you may not feel ready, especially with the APC.

Regardless, it is hard and needs a lot of patience. If you want to be MRICS then the choice is yours.

MRICS and FRICS

RICS Fellow or FRICS is different from MRICS. A FRICS is someone who stands out with a few components. FRICS can be selected as long as they are at five years minimum from post-qualification. Here are some qualities:

  • Champion - your service recognised by proper authority
  • Expert - being verified for sharing, advancing, and interpreting knowledge
  • Influencer - the way you influence professionalism and how it is taken
  • Role model - upholding standards for clients, colleagues, and the public

Being a FRICS is difficult. You need to be an MRICS and have high achievements. These are what you need to know about the differences between the two.

Benefits of an MRICS

Being an MRICS gives you the edge in applying for jobs. The title is something many values around the world as well. It has become a preference by a lot of companies too.

These are the benefits and are applied quite for a long time once a person becomes an MRICS. A long process with longer benefits. There is recognition for any achievement you make as well.
